Jessica closer to solo sailing dream

"Sunshine Coast teenager Jessica Watson isn't old enough to get a boat licence but she hopes to next year become the youngest person to sail solo around the world.

The 15-year-old will today take a huge leap towards that dream when she embarks on a 10-day voyage across the Tasman along with two other crewmates today.

Jessica will set sail from Brisbane and hopes to land in Whangarei, on the nothern tip of the northern Island of New Zealand in about 10 days.

However, she predicts it could take as long as 16 days depending on the weather.

While for insurance purposes she won't be officially skippering the 34ft yacht, Jessica, 15, said it was all lead up work to breaking Jesse Martin’s famous record.

“This idea is it’s a training voyage,” she said.

“There will be three of us on board but I’ll be calling the shots and doing the work. It’s a bit of a trial I suppose.”"
