Columbus replica ship Nina visiting Santa Cruz Harbor - San Jose Mercury News: "In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue, and now you can visit a replica of the ship he sailed at the Santa Cruz harbor.

The Nina, called the most historically accurate Columbus ship every built by Archaeology magazine, sailed into Santa Cruz on Tuesday.

At first glance, the boat seems painfully small -- only 66 feet long -- and the structure is authentically bare-bones, right down to the wooden tiller the crew still uses to steer the boat.

Most people are shocked that Columbus and his crew sailed across the Atlantic in a ship so small, said Capt. Kyle Friauf. And they made the voyage three times under conditions that would seem unbearable to modern Americans."
